our mission
We’re mobilizing $4 billion to secure the future of 15 million hectares of mangroves by 2030. By shifting from short-term fixes to systemic, long-term investment, we ensure mangroves are financed, protected, and fully integrated into global economic and climate frameworks.

Why Mangroves

The Superpower of Mangroves

Mangroves are one of the most powerful—and overlooked—nature-based solutions. Today, 50% of mangrove ecosystems are at risk, putting 2.1 million people directly in harm’s way. Protecting mangroves means protecting livelihoods, biodiversity, and economies.

What is a mangrove & why do they matter?

Mangroves are small coastal forests that grow where land meets sea. They may look modest, but their impact is massive. They protect coastlines from storms and erosion, store up to five times more carbon than tropical rainforests, support critical fisheries, and serve as lifelines for over 2.1 million people around the world. Mangroves are essential to climate resilience, biodiversity, food security, and economic stability—especially for vulnerable coastal communities.

What is the Mangrove Breakthrough?

The Mangrove Breakthrough is a global movement to reshape how mangroves are valued, financed, and protected. It brings together governments, investors, civil society, and local communities to drive system-wide change—mobilizing $4 billion to secure the future of over 15 million hectares of mangroves by 2030. This isn’t just a conservation effort—it’s a blueprint for how nature can be integrated into global economic and climate systems.

What is the Mangrove Breakthrough Hub?

The Hub is the driving engine behind the Mangrove Breakthrough. It accelerates collaboration across sectors, aligns policy and finance strategies, and sets the conditions for capital to flow into the right places. The Hub is responsible for connecting partners, scaling investment-ready projects, and ensuring that mangrove action is community-led, finance-aligned, and built to last.

What’s our long-term goal?

Our goal is to secure the future of mangroves as essential global infrastructure—protecting over 15 million hectares by 2030, embedding them into national policies, and unlocking $4 billion in high-integrity finance. More than that, we aim to redefine how the world invests in nature—starting with mangroves, and building a model that can be applied to other ecosystems around the world.

Who are our partners?

The Mangrove Breakthrough is supported by a broad coalition of governments, financial institutions, NGOs, Indigenous and local community groups, and private sector partners. It operates in close partnership with the Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA), the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC), and the High-Level Climate Champions, among others—uniting diverse actors under a shared commitment to nature-based solutions.

How did the Mangrove Breakthrough begin?

The Mangrove Breakthrough was launched in 2022 at COP27 by the High-Level Climate Champions and the Global Mangrove Alliance, in response to a critical gap: despite their immense value, mangroves were receiving just a fraction of global climate finance. Recognizing the urgency, a coalition of governments, financial institutions, NGOs, and community leaders came together to create a unified, global effort to change that. The Breakthrough was designed to be a systems-level solution—to mainstream mangroves into finance, policy, and economic development worldwide, all with the end goal of helping communities thrive.

What is the Mangrove Breakthrough Council and how is the initiative governed?

The Mangrove Breakthrough is guided by a high-level Advisory Council made up of leaders from government, finance, civil society, and science. This Council ensures strategic alignment, accountability, and credibility across all aspects of the initiative. It plays a critical role in shaping direction, overseeing progress, and championing the Breakthrough’s mission at the global level.

The Mangrove Council Members include:

+ Roa Walid Daher – Protocol and International Cooperation Specialist, Partnerships & Special Projects at MOCCAE and representative of the Mangrove Alliance for Climate
+ Dr. Jennifer Howard – Vice President, Blue Carbon Program, Chair of the Council and representative of the GMA
+ Catherine Lovelock – Associate Professor, University of Queensland
+ Naomi Morenzoni – Senior Vice President, Climate & Innovation Philanthropy, Salesforce
+ Emmanuelle Pinault – Department Director, Systems Transformation, High-Level Climate Champions

What are our guiding principles?

The Mangrove Breakthrough is guided by a clear set of principles that ensure all partners and endorsers contribute in a meaningful and impactful way. These principles serve as essential guardrails for successful mangrove interventions. We work to safeguard nature, while also empowering people and communities who rely on mangroves for their wellbeing. We are committed to designing for long-term sustainability, mobilizing high-integrity capital, and using the best available science, information, and practices. Just as importantly, we align our efforts to the broader local and global context, ensuring that all actions are rooted in place, relevance, and equity.

What comes next?

We’re just getting started. The Mangrove Breakthrough website will launch soon—serving as a central hub for updates, tools, and global progress. To stay informed on upcoming milestones, funding opportunities, and partner news, sign up for our newsletter and be part of the movement as it grows.
