For the future

Together,
we're a force.

The Mangrove Breakthrough is a movement that will not only protect, conserve, & restore mangroves, but reshape how nature is valued and financed worldwide. We work with a series of stakeholders that enable us to deliver on our goals.

A co-founder of the Mangrove Breakthrough, the Global Mangrove Alliance is an instrumental delivery partner.

The Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA) is a key Mangrove Breakthrough partner that mobilizes and engages NGOs and scientific institutions to implement high-quality activities to restore, protect, and manage mangrove ecosystems on the ground. The GMA offers a unique value through 14 national chapters and 100+ member network that represents 45 mangrove countries.

Breaking down our key stakeholder and endorsement groups

Governments

National and subnational governments play a critical role in policy integration, funding allocation, and regulatory support. By embedding mangroves into environmental commitments (NDCs & NBSAPs1) and national development plans, they can leverage international finance and ensure long-term conservation.
1 NBSAP: A National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) is a country’s roadmap for protecting nature and meeting global biodiversity goals.

Financial Institutions

Banks, asset managers, development finance institutions, businesses, and private investors hold the capital needed to scale mangrove restoration. By integrating mangroves into sustainable finance models, they can de-risk investments and unlock high-value returns through blue bonds, microfinance, and blended capital strategies.

NGOs & CSOs

NGOs, multilateral organizations, and UN bodies provide scientific expertise, advocacy, and implementation support. Their role is to ensure that mangrove conservation is guided by best practices and positioned within the broader climate and biodiversity agenda.

International organizations and alliances

Multilateral bodies, UN agencies, and global alliances provide the frameworks, standards, and coordination needed to align mangrove action across sectors. By embedding mangroves into global climate, biodiversity, and development agendas, these partners help drive policy coherence, unlock funding pathways, and foster cross-border collaboration.

Companies

Forward-thinking companies are integrating mangroves into their sustainability and climate resilience strategies. From decarbonization to supply chain adaptation, these businesses recognize the value of healthy mangrove ecosystems—and are helping finance, implement, and scale nature-positive solutions that benefit both people and planet.

Research Institutes & Universities

Academic institutions and research organizations provide the data, insights, and scientific validation that underpin all Breakthrough activities. Their role is to identify knowledge gaps, measure impact, and ensure that mangrove interventions are evidence-based and globally scalable.

Philanthropies

Philanthropic partners play a critical role in de-risking early-stage initiatives, funding innovation, and catalyzing action in underserved areas. Their support helps unlock larger flows of capital while ensuring that equity and long-term impact remain central to mangrove investments.
“Even among nature-based solutions, mangroves stand out as true – often unsung – champions. But mangroves are under threat. Half have already been lost. The loss of mangroves affects us all, but indigenous people and local communities living close to mangroves - overwhelmingly in the Global South - are impacted most. It doesn’t have to be this way.”

“Like in most tropical coastal communities around the world, the mangrove forests in the community of Awak in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, where I live, provide critical ecosystem services and resources that sustain the livelihoods of our people. As a local resource manager, I understand that mangrove forests provide vital habitat for fish and wildlife, timber, medicine and other cultural resources.”

“The Global Mangrove Alliance powers the Mangrove Breakthrough by turning global ambition into local impact—uniting partners and resources on the ground to deliver real progress toward protecting and restoring 15 million hectares of mangroves. This partnership bridges vision and action, ensuring lasting change for people and planet.”
